Sole Trader and Contractor Accounting in Auckland

Being your own boss usually means being your own accounts department too. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Business Launchpad works with Auckland sole traders and contractors who want their tax, GST and expense claims handled properly.

Book a discovery call and tell us where things currently stand, with no obligation to sign up afterwards.

Who Our Sole Trader Accounting Services Suit

We work as an accountant for contractors in NZ, including tradespeople, consultants and freelancers, alongside sole traders who have simply outgrown doing their own books. Our sole trader accounting services typically suit you if:

  • You are earning a steady income and want your tax and GST handled properly rather than guessed at.
  • You are weighing up whether to stay a sole trader or move to a company structure.
  • You are claiming home office, vehicle or equipment expenses and want to get it right.
  • Your income has grown to the point where provisional tax now applies.

If you are earning a small, occasional side income with simple records, you may not need ongoing support yet.

Your Obligations as a Sole Trader

Once you are trading, several obligations apply straight away. You need to register with IRD, keep clear records of income and expenses, and file an individual tax return each year.

If your turnover crosses $60,000 in any 12-month period, GST registration becomes compulsory. Once your tax bill passes a certain threshold, provisional tax instalments apply throughout the year rather than one lump sum at year-end.

Good records matter too. Home office costs are generally apportioned based on the area used for business, and vehicle expenses require a logbook or an accepted mileage rate. As a self-employed person, you also sit outside the standard ACC employee levy system, so it pays to understand how ACC CoverPlus applies before an injury forces the question.

We cannot promise a specific tax outcome or guarantee how IRD will treat any claim. Our focus is on making sure your obligations are met and your records hold up if reviewed.

What Our Sole Trader Tax Accountant Service Covers

As your sole trader tax accountant, we handle the parts that most often get missed or left too late:

IRD Registration

IRD registration and getting your structure right from day one.

Provisional Tax

Provisional tax calculations, so instalments reflect what you actually owe.

GST Returns

GST returns, filed on time and reconciled against your real figures.

Expense Reviews

Expense reviews, covering home office, vehicle and equipment claims.

Annual Income Tax Returns

Annual income tax returns, prepared once your year-end figures are settled.

Ongoing Xero Support

Ongoing Xero support, so your bookkeeping stays current between filing periods.

If you also hold rental property alongside your sole trader income, our rental property tax support team can include it in the same return.

Process and Fees

We start with a discovery call to understand your business, your current records, and where you are at, then confirm the scope and give you a clear fee estimate before anything begins.

We bill by the hour for the work actually done, not a fixed monthly package, regardless of how simple or complex your year turns out. As a qualified Auckland tax accountant, our team handles the compliance side directly, with chartered accounting expertise available if your situation calls for it.

If your business grows to the point of needing annual financial statement preparation or a company structure, that conversation happens naturally as part of ongoing work, not a separate pitch. Some clients also move into business advisory for growth once they take on staff or plan an expansion.

Let’s Sort Your Sole Trader Accounting

If you are not confident that your tax, GST and expense claims are being handled properly, we would like to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a self-employed accountant in Auckland if my income is low?

Not necessarily. If your records are simple and your income modest, you may manage on your own for now. Once GST or provisional tax starts applying, most sole traders find proper support worthwhile.

Both typically operate under the same rules as self-employed individuals, though contractors sometimes have tax deducted at source, depending on their industry. We will confirm what applies to your arrangement.

Yes. We will walk through the practical differences in tax, liability and paperwork, though the right structure depends on your individual circumstances rather than a single standard answer.

No. Many clients start with spreadsheets or paper records, and we help set up proper bookkeeping from there, usually in Xero.

An accountant for self-employed contractors understands schedular payments, withholding tax elections and the specific expense claims that apply to contract work, rather than treating every self-employed client the same way.
